Nearly a year after OSHA published its final rule on Operator Qualification, some companies still have questions about training and certification. How should employers evaluate their operators, and how often? What documentation is required? What implications, if any, are there to existing crane operator certifications? Hear from an industry expert on how his company implemented the requirements and learn the latest developments from NCCCO leadership.

Bret Shields is Director of Safety with Buckner Heavylift Cranes. With 20+ years in the crane and equipment industry, he has served in roles from project equipment management, corporate equipment management, crane and lifting management and safety/risk management.  

Thom Sicklesteel Bio

Thom Sicklesteel is CEO of the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO). He is also a voting member of ASME B30.5 and an alternate on B30 and serves on the boards of 8 other companies/associations. Prior to joining NCCCO, Sicklesteel served as General Manager for Leavitt Cranes-USA, Branch Manager for Barnhart Crane and Rigging, as well as President of Sicklesteel Cranes, Inc. (SCI). Under his leadership, SCI won multiple national and regional safety awards. He was a stakeholder for the Washington State Crane Administrative Code Committee and Select Committee. Sicklesteel has served as a subject matter expert for the Washington Crane Certifier Exam, Construction Hoist Exam, as well as the NCCCO Lift Director Exam and Crane Type Advisory Group.
