Breakout Session: Design, Fabrication and Testing of Cantilever Beams and Triangle Plates

Cantilever beams and triangle plates are valuable specialty rigging tools, but the engineering fundamentals behind their design and use are simpler than they may appear. This presentation will provide examples of commonly used rigging applications and will identify resources for design, fabrication, load testing and lift planning.

Chad Fox, PE, SE, is a Project Manager with Ruby+Associates Structural Engineers in Bingham Farms, Michigan.  He leads the firm’s Grand Rapids, Michigan office and its Heavy Lift service sector.  Fox has over 15 years of experience in specialty steel design and fabrication, load testing, lifting and rigging equipment utilization, heavy lift engineering and field oversight.  In addition to his almost 10 years with Ruby, he spent 7 years as the chief engineer with a crane, transport and specialty rigging contractor.  He recently joined the ASME BTH-1 Committee, which oversees the standardization for design criteria for below the hook lifting devices.
